Bishop Clarence Kelly

Ordination and Consecration

1970-1971

Having heard of a Catholic seminary in Switzerland where the true Faith was taught, Clarence Kelly arranged to meet with its founder, Archbishop Lefebvre, who had also founded the Society of St. Pius X. In 1971 the future Father Kelly entered the Seminary at Econe, Switzerland.

April 14, 1973

Clarence Kelly was ordained a priest by Archbishop Lefebvre. On his return to America from Switzerland, Father Kelly began offering Mass on Long Island, New York.  The first Mass center was in his brother’s garage, which he had transformed into a chapel, naming it St. Pius V Chapel.

In 1993 Father Kelly and Father Jenkins visited Bishop Alfred Mendez to ask him if he would consider consecrating a bishop.  Before they even had the chance to bring up the subject, Bishop Mendez informed Father Kelly that he wanted to consecrate him a bishop.  In the meantime, he became critically ill with pneumonia and he was anointed by Father Jenkins.  Bishop Mendez gradually improved and with his health came a renewed determination to consecrate Father Kelly.  Thus on October 19,1993, in his private chapel in Carlsbad, California, and in accordance with the traditional Roman Rite, Bishop Mendez consecrated Father Kelly to the holy episcopacy.
